Meta Tags
Up front there are 3 basic Meta tags I would like you to focus
on. Yes there are others but none more important than the
Big 3;
| Tag name |
HTML example
of tag |
suggested number
of characters in tag |
| Name |
<title>PuppyTails.com - Dog tail decorations</title> |
70 |
| Keyword |
<meta name="keywords" content="Pet
gifts, puppy tails, pets, dogs"> |

| Description |
<meta name="description" content="Wonderful
decorations for your pet's tail. Visit our Monthly Specials
Page at puppytails.com."> |

In your name meta tag we would like you to offer more than
just a page name, try to work in a few "major" key
words without going over the suggested limit of 70 key words.
This next step is critical to your page optimization. Do
this on paper first. In order to do it correctly we suggest
you list your key words by ranking of importance (most important
first)
After you have 6-12 key words noted, Go to your page and
begin filling in all the text areas with what you want to
say on your page. Once your text area are filled in for the
average human to read, next will be the task of replacing
some of your words in the text areas of your site with Key
Words that you have listed by ranking of importance. The first
Key Word should be the most important word in terms of search
phrase typed in to find your site and this one phrase can
bare up to 40% of the usage popularity and the remaining key
words will divide the remaining depending upon the number
of times the word is used on the page. This also means you
want your number one key phrase used with the most density.
This can take some time and tweaking because it is here where
you are trying to satisfy your 9 grade grammar teacher AND
the search engine’s algorithms. Which is more important?
Now that your page content is written in stone lets complete
the Key word meta tags and the page description.
Add your list your key words to your Key word meta tags within
the head section of your web site, they need to be in lower
case characters with a comma and a space separating them.
Remember to list them by ranking of importance to the page
Inbound Linking
There has been and there will continue to be a lot of interest
for site owners to obtain links coming from other web sites
the reason is clear, Search Engines build into their algorithms
ways to identify popular web sites. They use the logic that
“the more sites that are (within the same industry)
linking to your site then the higher rank within their index
your site should receive. There is no shortage of “Web
Traffic” solutions that attempt to trick the search
engines into thinking you have more inbound links than you
do. Be warned most all of these “tricks” get uncovered
and get many sites banned from the rankings. We suggest you
do begin a manual inbound link campaign and be selective of
the type of web sites you want to attract. There are several
inbound linking campaigns you can employ to help your page
rankings; Reciprocal Links, Articles displayed on other sites
within the same industry, News releases and Advertising.
Site Maps
Coded site maps are not intended for humans as you may have
gone to a site map page within a web site. A coded site map
represents the architecture of content within a web site.
We use 4 different coded site maps, XML or Google site map,
TXT, ROR and of course HTML. This helps Search Engines and
search engine spiders that crawl the pages they find pages
on the site.We believe strongly that assisting the search
engine spider in finding what we want them to find is another
tool in optimizing a web site.
Directory Submissions
DMOZ is the open source directory with the most influence
on search engines including Google. If your not listed in
DMOZ, do what you can to get listed...Its been termed the
"Google directory" for a reason. It is supposed
to be hard to get approval but if you follow the basic steps
you should never have a problem with the ODP (or any other
directory for that matter). There are many other directories
and you must be careful Not to submit to all of them. In the
past there were software tools that claimed to submit your
site to thousands. Today it is considered spamming..
Quality and trusted directories actually want to offer a
service not just a place to offer PPC advertising. When these
trusted sites are good at listing, they get traffic; if they
are bad, they don't. Their job is similar to yours i.e. they
are in need of relevant listings and content. Your site needs
to have complete seo architecture that is complete before
you go to this step; a lot of sites try to get listed before
all is complete the directories read the site without being
relevant. This will definitely hinder your directory listings
and upset your SEO plans. |
